Manifold
Run Hello Pico on Manifold — the runtime host for a single Pico.
Welcome to Manifold, the first runtime-focused course of the Open Engineering Academy. This course frames the smallest honest runtime story for a single Pico: one Pico Element, hosted by Manifold on a local Kubernetes cluster, wired through one Wrangler-declared Channel, receiving one event and producing one observable response.
Where this course fits
Manifold is a runtime course, not a fourth phase alongside compose / construct / behave. The three-layer story still holds:
Crossplane composes, Sandcastle constructs, Picos behave.
Manifold names the runtime host on which behaviour is observed. Under the Phase 7 constructive-realization contract, the role assignments this course teaches are:
| Tool | Runtime role |
|---|---|
| Kubernetes | RuntimeSubstrate — the underlying execution layer |
| Manifold | RuntimeEnvironment — Kubernetes-hosted host for Pico Elements |
| Pico engine | The in-process host inside Manifold that runs Pico Elements |
| Wrangler | InteractionTopology authoring — declares Channels and subscriptions |
| Crossplane | Realization step — composes runtime resources onto the substrate |
| Sandcastle | Realization step — constructs the executable form of a Pico |
This course keeps the runtime story narrow on purpose. It covers one Pico, hosted by one Manifold RuntimeEnvironment, wired through one Wrangler Channel, receiving one event and producing one observable response. Multi-Pico topologies, fleet orchestration, graphical control surfaces (for example, Home Assistant), and non-Kubernetes runtimes are explicitly out of scope for this first runtime course.
What you will learn
By the end of the course you will be able to:
- Describe what a RuntimeSubstrate, a RuntimeEnvironment, an InteractionTopology, a Channel, an EventType, and an Observation are, using the Phase 7 vocabulary.
- Explain how a Pico Element produced by the Hello Pico lab is hosted by a Manifold RuntimeEnvironment without being replaced by it.
- Explain how a Wrangler-declared Channel wires exactly one event into the hosted Pico and how the resulting response is observed.
- Run the accompanying Hello Pico on Manifold lab end-to-end on a local minikube cluster and capture the single observed response as the lab’s produced artifact.
See the course descriptor in metadata.yaml for the machine-readable summary (id, level, duration, prerequisites, runtime_substrate, runs_on).
Prerequisites
- Completion of the Pico course, or equivalent familiarity with Rules, the Parser, the Composer, and the
hello-world-picoartifact. - Completion of the Kubernetes setup foundation so
docker, minikube, andkubectlresolve on yourPATH. - Familiarity with the Crossplane course and the Hello Pico on Kubernetes lab is helpful but not required; this course consumes their outputs rather than replaces them.
How this course is structured
This first runtime course is intentionally small: an overview page (this file), a shared glossary, and one runnable lab. It does not yet carry a Part 1 / Part 2 / Part 3 structure — the runtime story is scoped to a single Pico so that later curriculum waves can extend it without retrofitting.

The runnable material lives in the reusable lab:
- Hello Pico on Manifold lab — deploy a Manifold RuntimeEnvironment onto a local minikube cluster, host a single Pico inside it via a Wrangler-declared Channel, send one event, and observe one response.
What you will produce
A single artifact directory named hello-world-pico-on-manifold — the lab captures the exact manifests applied to the cluster, the Wrangler channel spec, the one event sent in, and the one observed response line printed by the hosted Pico. This matches the produces entry in metadata.yaml.
Start here
- Hello Pico on Manifold lab — the single runnable path for this course.
- Hello Two Picos lab — the first multi-Pico runtime lab that builds directly on Hello Pico on Manifold. It reuses the same Manifold RuntimeEnvironment on Kubernetes and adds a second named Pico plus one Wrangler-declared producer→consumer wiring. Run it after Hello Pico on Manifold when you are ready for the smallest honest two-Pico interaction.
- Glossary — course-scoped vocabulary aligned with the Phase 7 constructive-realization contract.
This is the first runtime-focused milestone of the academy. It deliberately covers one Pico, one Channel, one event, and one observation. Broader topologies, additional Control Surfaces, and non-Kubernetes runtime substrates are deferred to later curriculum waves.
